| How do I get a #1 ranking in the search engines? |
| FAQs - General |
|
That depends on which #1 you’re talking about. If you are talking about the “sponsored results” that is a matter of budget and popularity. If you have the budget to outbid the competition and/or your ads obtain a higher click through rate than your competition, you can pretty easily become #1 in these rankings. If you’re talking about the organic/natural/non-paid results, that is a much different story. Search engines weigh several factors when deciding on a #1 result and they don’t reveal those weightings so there is a certain amount of “do your best and hope for the best”. Now just because it is difficult to be #1 doesn’t mean that performing SEO isn’t important, because it is crucial, but it does mean that you should set reasonable expectations. You probably can’t be #1 in all of your keywords, but it may be possible to really focus on one or two for ultra high rankings. Another piece of the equation is linking. Search engines judge the relevance of your site not only by your keyword content, but also by who links to you, and who links to them. This is one of the reasons that it is impossible to guarantee a result in SEO, because you can’t control the content of another site. You can identify relevant sites and try to gain links from them to you, but if they change their content, that may ultimately hurt your ranking. For those sports fans out there it is kind of like the strength of schedule component in the college football rankings; your team might go undefeated, but if your opponents are weaker than your ranking will be lower. |
